Theme for the month | Noir Portrait and Figure Lets have some fun and paint costumed figures this month on the theme of Noir. We will do 2 paintings including a portrait and a figure. As always we will focus on the 4 main aspects of a portrait: Proportion, Value Color and Edge and aim to capture a likeness in 2 hours.

Theme for the month | The Portrait as a Story. Portraits that include objects tell us a story about our subject. In this class you can compose your own painting or work from a selection of themes and images that Dominique will provide. It could be as simple as a Portrait of a loved one with flowers or favorite book or, a figure in a landscape with their favorite park in the background. The options are endless.

Theme for the month | Portraits with the Zorn Palette This month we will 2 portraits. First we will study and copy a zorn portait and use his famed palette of only 4 colors. Then we will paint a contemporary portrait in the style of Zorn and put what we learned about his palette and technique in to practice. As always we will focus on the 4 main aspects of a portrait: Proportion, Value Color and Edge.

Theme for the Month | Master Series - John Singer Sargent In This class we will practice the techniques of the Gilded Age's most celebrated portrait painter John Singer Sargent. You can choose 1 of 5 reference photos to work from, or any Sargent portrait painting that you find on your own would be fine too. Our goal will be to work directly and use his palette. As always We aim to finish the portrait in 4 sessions.

Theme for the month | Quick Sketch Portrait and Figure with a Limited Palette Quick Sketch painting is a great way to loosen up and practice. We will focus on the 4 main aspects of portrait and figure painting and capture the gesture and likeness of our model in just over 2 hours As always we will focus on the 4 main aspects of a portrait: Proportion, Value Color and Edge and aim to capture a likeness in 2 hours.

Theme for the Month | Paint a look from the Met Gala In This class we are going to have a little fun and paint our favorite Celeb in costume in all its extravagance. You can pick your own reference from any Met Gala. We will play with composition, color and texture to make a compelling painting. We aim to finish the portrait in 4 sessions.

Theme of the Month | Painting Facial Expressions This month we will have a little fun by painting facial expressions and exploring emotions in portraiture. We will paint one portrait per session.  We will learn techniques to achieve lively brushwork and natural expression.  As always Dominique demonstrates the painting process and breaks it down into clear steps. We use a limited palette.

Theme for the month | Painting Sargent’s hands The challenge of painting hands is easily overcome when we study the way the masters did it. This month we will look at the structure, grace, and masterful way John Singer Sargent simplified, blocked in and effortlessly painted hand. Each week we will analyze and paint one set of hands. We will work with a systematic process and a limited palette

Theme for the month | Still Life Painting, Part 1 We will break from our usual 1 painting per month and do 4 still-life paintings. These exercises help us master the techniques and processes that are the foundation for all other disciplines. We will work from my favorite Still life painters; Henri Fantin Latour, Emil Carlsen, William Nicholson and Morandi. We will paint one painting per week with a limited palette.

Theme for the month | Painting the Eyes, Nose and Mouth This month we will paint one facial feature per week. To take the experience a little deeper we will look at the anatomy and structure of the feature as we paint. Understanding the facial features on a deeper level makes our portraits more believable and sophisticated Each week students receive critiques. Enjoy lifetime access to the class recordings.

Theme for the month | Still Life Painting, Part 2 We will break from our usual 1 painting per month and do 2 still life paintings. Dominique will instruct and demo the process of setting up a still life arrangement with lighting and then paint it from life. Between sessions students will set up their own still life arrangements and paint them from life. Each week students receive critiques of their work.

Theme for the month | Finish That Painting! Each week we will work on one painting that we started in the past year but haven’t yet finished. Ideally paintings that we did in class together, but could be work you have done on your own. Dominique will select 4 unfinished demos and finish one of them. We will learn about glazing, scumbling, edges, detail and how to put the final touches on a painting.

Theme for the month | Alla Prima Portraits Alla Prima Portrait painting is a great way to learn how to simplify form and skillfully mix skin tones. Dominique will demo and break down the process of painting into clear and consecutive steps. Our process focuses on the 4 main aspects of a portrait: Proportion, Value, Color, and Edge. We will use a limited palette that helps us paint color relationships.

Theme for the month | Mastering Skintones in Portrait Painting This month we demystify the process of mixing skin tones with a reliable 3 step process. We will use a limited palette that is designed to help us understand color theory and color relationships. We will do 2 paintings. With weekly step-by-step demos, and recorded critiques, you'll leave this class with new skill and confidence.
